Steven Spielberg及Tom Hanks+Gary Goetzman的制片公司Playtone过去为HBO制作了《兄弟连 Band of Brothers》及姐妹剧《太平洋战争 The Pacific》，而当时HBO预定还会制作改编自《Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany》一书的《空战群英 Masters of the Air》，但后来一直没有下文。

而今天Apple TV+宣布接手了这项目，据报这部限定剧会超过8小时长度，预算高达2亿。负责过《兄弟连 Band of Brothers》的John Orloff会为《空战群英》执笔，剧中讲述二战时的美国第八航空军。
