【简     介】:
There’s little doubt that the new BBC1 mini-series Ocean Giants will win awards. The first programme in the series of tree looked at the big whales and what a spectacle  it was. The programme took a look at a range of whales species culminating the the ocean giant the blue whale.

There was a time a few years ago that I knew the names of all the species of whales but I have to admit that I’d forgotten just how fascinating and big both the blue whale and bowhead whales are. The quality of underwater filming has certainly improved a lot over the last few years and some of the scenes filmed were memorable.

The film of the male humpbacks fighting for the female showed us the power that whales possess, while the sight of the mother right whale trying to protect her calf from killer whales showed just how strong those family bonds are for these magnificent marine mammals.

For me though the most interesting shots had to be the filming of the bowhead whales. These secretive giants that live year round in the Arctic seas are still little understood. The latest research seems to suggest though that they could be some of the oldest animals on the planet. With a very low body temperature  the bowhead whales are thought to live beyond 200 years old.

As the Ocean Giants programme told us the bowhead whale is only able to survive the cold arctic waters because of its thick coating of fat which makes up the majority of it’s body weight. To keep that weight on the whale was filmed just gliding through the rich waters with it’s mouth gaping open and filter feeding .

The bowhead whale has a large and bony skull which it uses to break through the sea ice to enable it to breathe. The recordings of the bowhead whales song heard on the programme were just most iconic sounds associated with whales.

From the second biggest whale (as measured by weight) the programme then moved on to film the biggest whales and the biggest animal on the planet. The blue whales had a major threat to their survival because of the whaling industry with numbers dropping from hundreds of thousands to just a few tens of thousands now.

This mammoth of the seas was filmed around the southern coast of Sri Lanka which provides and ideal feeding ground for the giants. Deep down in the sea near to the coast swarms of krill live and it’s on these krill that the whales live.

The photography and filming throughout the programme was excellent as you would expect from two of the world’s leading underwater film-makers which included an ex Cousteau diver.

The way that the documentary was put together also made it extremely entertaining. It was not just a voice over for a natural history programme which has become the mainstay of the genre over the last few years. The programme featured the divers filming the whales and describing their experiences which added a lot of character to the programme.

In addition to the live film sequences there were some computer generated sequences to graphically demonstrate some action.
